One part of the endowment focuses on community development work, mostly in the outer boroughs, such as job training, nonprofit real estate development, the Freelancers Union health care program and support for food businesses from artisanal food companies arising in Brooklyn to larger food processing plants that provide employment.

This event comes as one of the many ways UNESCO seeks to promote the importance of Literacy and recognizing those who work hard to spread literacy and attract adult learners to the 172 community development centers that also provide adult education program, focusing on literacy and vocational training.

My work in the local community continued for several years before I left to work on the state level as the Executive Director of the Louisiana Association for Community Economic Development, served as the Co-Chair of the MidSouth Collaborative for Nonprofit Development, a Director of Programs for a faith-based nonprofit community development corporation, and as the Director of the Nonprofit Resource Center at a volunteer center.
