In May, 2008, Bolivian President Evo Morales set August 10th as the date for a recall referendum that would allow voters to cut short his term in office, as well as those of his vice president and the country's eight provincial governors.
In an innovation which he once championed but now seems to regret, this allows for a recall referendum, once an elected official has served half his term, and provided that 20% of the electorate requests one.
It also brought the ballot initiative and an innovation known as the recall, which allowed citizens to petition for an official to have his term of office brought prematurely to an end.
