Last year Hutchison Telecom exchanged its highly successful Orange mobile phone operation in Britain for 10% of Germany's Mannesmann services conglomerate.
It was discovered that the security division of Telecom Italia, a privatised telecoms group, was running an espionage operation that exploited the firm's access to private data.
