With the Syriantrack dead, Arafat knew as he set off reluctantly for the Camp David summit in 2000 that the hopes of Mr Clinton and Mr Barak now depended on him.
Nobody, at this stage, can be sure how the new momentum on the Syriantrack will fit into this timetable or, indeed, what the procedure and timing of the Syrian negotiations is going to be.
This initiative served a genuine and sincere opportunity to achieve a just and comprehensive peace on all tracks in our region, including the Syrian-Israeli track and the Lebanese-Israeli track, and provided a sincere opportunity to make peace.
