Rather than embrace the daring and offbeat as the network (unsuccessfully) did with Swingtown, Moonlight and Viva Laughlin in seasons past, this season's schedule is once again heavy on the tried and true: procedurals, multicamera sitcoms and spin-offs.

As much as I loved Jericho and Swingtown because we were having a great time in our little bubble making the show, we always knew we were swimming against the tide and it's nice to not feel that way with this show.

The problems were compounded in the 2007--08 season, when Moonves tried to step out of the Murder, She Wrote mode with such shows as Swingtown (a racy look at 1970s suburban spouse-swapping), Viva Laughlin (an adapted musical dramedy about gambling) and Kid Nation (a Lord of the Flies-style reality series).
