The researchers from the University of Dundee also looked at the risk of developing skin cancer from sunbeds compared with the risk associated with tanning in the Mediterranean sun.
"The ultraviolet rays from indoor tanning are generally stronger than the summer sun at noon, " said Dawn Holman, a behavioral scientist who works in the CDC's Division of Cancer Prevention and Control.
Cancer Research UK says people should not use artificial tanning devices for cosmetic purposes because they - like the sun - increase skin cancer risk.
