For many the sacking last week of Ayse Sucu (pictured), the head of the women's centre of Turkey's state-run religious-affairs directorate (Diyanet), amounted to nothing less.
With her loosely worn headscarf and progressive views, Mrs Sucu had become an emblem for Diyanet as it launched a series of initiatives to advance women's rights in Turkey.
