It has old crystalline rocks from several hundreds of millions of years ago up to more recent formations of rocks including one of the largest Alpine Triassic carbonate successions, which has rich fossil remains.
These smaller firms hung on to plots, sometimes for decades, trying successions of innovative techniques to squeeze out every last drop of hydrocarbons and in the process becoming extremely familiar with the geology of their fields.
