In 1997, aged 32, she moved back to Beijing from New York, joining a steadytrickle of returnees (the Chinese call them hai gui or sea-turtles): young, western-educated professionals keen to apply their new skills in their own country, and to get rich.
But in just four short years, the slow trickle of backpackers has turned into a steady stream of adventure travellers eager to experience the spectacular trail for themselves.
