After receiving a high school education in the U.S. and attending Sandhurst Military Academy in England, Abdullah in 1981 embarked on a career in the Jordanian army, rising to command the specialforces as a major general.
It was sent to America's military high command in May, during a time when relations were febrile following the killing in Pakistan by American specialforces of Osama bin Laden.
