Eventually both Smaug and Gollum lose their lives due to their inability to free themselves from their golden shackles, while Bilbo is saved, both body and soul, by the skin of his teeth.
Act Two will bring our band of dwarves through the spider-infested wood, lead them to their conflict with the Wood Elves, and finally take them to the mountain, Dale, and the showdown with Smaug.
But even within The Hobbit Trilogy itself there may be technical improvements in post-production that will address some of these issues in the forthcoming installments, The Desolation of Smaug (to be released on December 13, 2013) and There And Back Again (July 18, 2014).
