The Iraqi government said Tuesday it would review the status of private security companies as anger over the alleged involvement of Blackwater USA in a fatal shooting of civilians threatened to spread to other firms providing protection for dignitaries and Westerners on Iraq's chaotic streets.
However, anger over reports of civilian killings prompted President Hamid Karzai to order Afghan security forces to stop requesting coalition airstrikes.
"Giving over half a million pounds of taxpayers' money to Bernard Matthews will cause considerable anger unless the business is also held to account for its bio-security lapses, " he said.
Gen Kayani too has had to defend the army's relationship with the US as anger has grown about excessive US penetration of Pakistan's government and security establishment - even though some of the anti-Americanism has been whipped up by the military itself.
