When I think of a handwritten edition of The Hobbit, my first thought is of dwarves hard at work at their desks, the sound of their pens scratching on paper echoing through the halls of Moria.
The 16-minute work for string orchestra starts out with meowing strings that breaks off into every kind of sound that can be made with string instruments, from eerie harmonics to coarse scraping, scratching and sharp pizzicatos.
