An estimated 200 homes on the island were destroyed, and although many others suffered damage from flooding, many structures were protected by massive sand dunes that had been constructed along the oceanfront.
Although most rides didn't suffer structural damage, Coney Island's amusement areas and adjacent boardwalk were covered in sand and flooded with up to five feet of water.
