The UK's fourth biggest network - Three - is set to take over part of EE's 4G spectrum, but is not due to do so until September 2013.
The issue was compounded when it was revealed that Apple's first 4G-enabled handset, the iPhone 5, would only work on EE's network.
But since EE's 4G announcement, rival networks have sought to undermine the firm's offering.

The fear was that it would be in EE's interest to make sure this work did not proceed too rapidly.
In a statement on its website, Vodafone underlined what it saw as a weakness in EE's 4G - indoor coverage.

Three is also set to take ownership of some of EE's existing 4G-spectrum, but will not do so until September 2013.
When EE's network launched, rivals questioned whether the spectrum band that it was using - 1800MHz - would provide good indoor coverage.
Meanwhile Phones4U, which has to date focused on selling mobile phones, has announced that it will launch its own mobile service, running on EE's network.
However, those operators were said to be angry at EE's 4G headstart, with O2 and Vodafone only recently agreeing not to take legal action over the matter.
While all Z10 devices sold will be ready for 4G, according the Waterloo crew, the BlackBerry Z10 will be available to utilize EE's existing 4G service immediately.
All in all, Ofcom believes that EE's period of being the only 4G game in town will shrink from as much as 18 months to as little as six months.
Customers will also be able to share photos, interact with friends and chat instantaneously, all through the most immersive mobile Facebook experience, which will be enhanced by EE's superfast 4G network.

"Although EE's 4G service is much faster than any network currently available in the UK, our testing shows that 4G connections are not consistent even within a nominated area, " he said.
The launch demonstrates the ability of EE's existing 4G network, running over 1800MHz, to offer the reach, capacity and high speeds necessary to deliver high speed broadband to rural homes and businesses.

Not a completely fair test - I had a six lane highway virtually to myself on EE's 4G while 3G networks are becoming congested - but an idea of what the future promises.
One imagines that EE's executives were desperate to offer Apple just about any deal, in order to be the only operator offering a 4G iPhone in the UK, but it now seems unlikely that will happen.
