On July 2, 1962, Sam Walton -- who'd previously operated a BenFranklin variety store and his own Walton's Five and Dime -- opened the first Walmart (then "Wal-Mart") in Rogers, Arkansas.
In 1971 a Merc member who had had a bad day sold his seat for a BenFranklin note, a transaction that took place alongside a urinal in the trading floor men's room.
