Jonathan Djanogly, Conservative MP for Huntingdon, said it was important "there remains a good non-paying road on the A14 route for local traffic to use".
The traffic diversion route for this closure is via Boscombe Road, Luton Road, Church Street, High Street North, Queensway, Court Drive and Kingsway and vice versa for the reverse route.
The proposed changes would see Highwood Road become a single-carriage dedicated bus and cycle route between Coniston Road and The Boulevard, with two-way traffic permitted between the Standing Stone roundabout and Coniston Road.
But many commuters and motorists said they did not really see the point of the scheme and some drivers reckoned the idea of having one route in and out restricts traffic flow and does not allow for accidents or other road closures.
