The chancellor also pledged to continue funding for "big infrastructure projects", including London's Crossrail project, the Mersey Gateway road bridge between Runcorn and Widnes and the Synchotron scientific facility in Oxfordshire.

The trial project, at Waverley Bridge, Lothian Road and the Caledonian Hotel, also aims to ensure people have a safe place to wait for taxis.

Once the project is complete the road will be completely resurfaced from the Sulby Bridge to the Rollick Road.

The road works are connected to a wider project to carry out repairs to the Kessock Bridge, which will start in February.

After years of planning and delays, in 2009 the Army Corps of Engineers started construction on a project, funded by the Department of Interior, to replace one mile of the road with a bridge.
