More than a third of institutional investment-management firms use expert networks, according to a late 2009 survey by Integrity Research Associates in New York.
In existence since the late 1980s, these firms exploded in popularity over the past decade and, according to a survey taken by Integrity Research, were consulted by some 36% of investment-management firms in 2009.
And it pledges to ensure that public funding mechanisms for university research safeguard its academic integrity.
"This is a common phenomenon, and it's definitely a field for anticorruption work, " says Li Chengyan, director of Peking University's Research Center for Government Integrity.
Most professional historians doubt Mr Bellesiles's research, not his integrity.
"I think there are some good research questions about the long term integrity of well bores - it has been shown in the US and Canada that a percentage have not been cemented properly and are going to leak or do leak - that's what I would focus on, " he added.
"It may affect some sponsorship, but there are plenty of companies out there that are keen to sponsor research and also to protect the academic integrity of the universities, " he said.
