And that job - which requires little human intervention - will take some 80 long years while the radioactivity from components in the reactor slowly fades.
The NIA's Capability of the UK Nuclear New Build Supply Chain study said that with investment, British firms are capable of supplying 90% of the components for new nuclear plants, but the largest metal forgings and some specialist reactor parts would need to be imported.
In addition, the modular design could make it more difficult to inspect and maintain key components, many of which would be located within the pressure vessel at the heart of the reactor, he said.
