Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said major roads were prepared for the "extreme cold weather", which had been predicted, and public transport services were "by and large still working".
It was highlighted during the debate that adverse weather conditions during the winter months impacts on a range of publicservices, from the health service to transport infrastructure.
