The steel-and-concrete skeleton of the Echelonproject has stood on the north Strip since 2008, a symbol of the initial promise and disastrous end of the Las Vegas construction boom.
The Genting Group announced Monday that it will break ground in 2014 on the 87-acre site where the partially built Echelonproject has sat for nearly five years, put on indefinite hold by Boyd Gaming Corp.
Donald Goldfarb, the interim dean of Columbia's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, said the latest project is aimed at helping the university's engineering school overcome its biggest hurdle in reaching the topmost echelon of the field: its relatively small size.
