Half of the rats in each group also were fed Pringles potato chips that are high in fat and calories.
The remaining rats in each group were fed high-calorie Pringles chips on some days and low-calorie Pringles Light chips on other days.
The Pringles Light chips are made with olestra, a synthetic fat substitute that has zero calories and passes through the body undigested.
If that gives you pause about eating the fat-free versions of Pringles and Lay's potato chips, which still use olestra, not to worry.
The company noted that its Pringles acquisition earlier in the year added to earnings and catapulted Kellogg into second place in the salty snack food market behind PepsiCo.
Pringles has been put on the block several times now, and the company was close to selling it to Diamond Foods, but pulled out when the deal fell through.
