"There are some real benefits that come with being a very high-volume PC manufacturer, " says Del Prete.
"Even that would strike me as being pretty far from their existing business model, " says IDC's Del Prete.
"The people who buy them are not replacing their notebooks with them, " says IDC analyst Crawford Del Prete.
"Someone like Sun would have more exposure than anyone else, " says Crawford Del Prete, an analyst with IDC.
"It speaks to the focus of the keynote, " said Crawford Del Prete, an analyst with tech tracker IDC.
"The margins on a machine like that are pretty low, " Del Prete says.
"It speaks to the emergence of a new segment, " Del Prete says.
Crawford Del Prete, a senior vice president at tech research firm IDC, says the Intel-Negroponte fight signals that the market for low-cost computers is heating up.
"It would be a pretty big leap from trying to figure out how to partner around the world to we're going to do it ourselves, " Del Prete says.
"Apple, you could argue, sets the standard for a lot of aspects of PC design, quite frankly, " says Crawford Del Prete, vice president of research at tech market tracker IDC.
"It would certainly be classic Apple in terms of 'We're going to take care of the entire experience from soup to nuts, '" says Crawford Del Prete, senior vice president at tech-market researcher IDC.
While the XPS One is starting out at a premium price, Del Prete predicts Dell will be able to drop the XPS One's price quickly--much more so than Apple could--by taking advantage of the scale of its operations.
"The fact you can pack more technology into different consumer electronics devices, on an unrelenting and steady pace defined by Moore's Law, means there will always be another gee-whiz gadget that will intoxicate, " says IDC analyst Crawford Del Prete.
Rather than focusing on geeky products for techies -- such as the Xserver and Mac Pro -- Del Prete says he's betting Steve Jobs will show off consumer-friendly products such as a freshened iPhone and a new version of the Apple TV set top box next week.
