The most significant feature of the 1972 World Heritage Convention is that it binds in a single document the concepts ofnature conservation and the preservationof cultural properties and sets out the duties of member-states and the international community for the preservationof monuments of world heritage.
The 1972 Convention for Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage developed from the merging of two separate movements: the first focusing on the preservationof cultural sites, and the other on the conservation ofnature.
