House prices on the two-mile Sandbanks peninsula, overlooking Britain's oldest cross-channel port, are reported to be higher than in Singapore, New York or Paris.
That prompted a hurried rebuilding of that part of the PATH signal system, a spokesman said, and an additional reform: The Port Authority now installs steel floodgates at the entrances to its cross-Hudson tunnels before major storms, including Sandy.
The operator said passengers due to make return journeys on Saturday or Sunday were advised to arrive at the Port of Calais or Port of Dover where their return travel would be honoured by other cross-channel operators.
