After a rather dismal period in the 1970s and '80s, Sony moved their motion picture operations to Culver City's former MGM studios in the early '90s, leading to a recently revitalized downtown area with upscale bars and quirky but user-friendly restaurants.
The company had only about a 20 percent share of the U.S. smartphone market in the first quarter of this year, a distant second to Research in Motion's 55 percent slice of the pie during the same period, according to IDC.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said the move would "provide members and the public a longer period of time to see the nominated films".
What has been a sleepy period for earnings heats up this afternoon with three noteworthy tech reports: Tibco, Accenture and Research In Motion are all expected to report results.
