On this special occasion, a global movement for a culture of peace was initiated by the United Nations to create a " grand alliance " of existing movements that unites all those already working for a culture of peace in its eight domains of action.
Mr. ROBERT ZOELLICK (Deputy Secretary of State): The people in Darfur need the leadership of the movements to seize an opportunity for peace, and they have an opportunity over the next few hours to agree to a package of changes that would strengthen the provisions that they had expressed concerns about.
However, local and global movements to make the effort are needed now, and could yield new jobs, new opportunities for peace, and global cooperation beyond what humanity has ever achieved.
