Payton said Lin was frustrated by the poor decisions he sometimes made under pressure.
Asked whether anyone on another team was injured as a result of the bounty program, Payton said no.
Payton said he and Lin still exchange text messages, but never truly went head-to-head on the court in their training sessions.
With five days left to appeal his suspension, Payton said he will make a decision in the next two to three days.
"He basically just wanted to play me all the time, " Payton said.

The league absolved Saints owner Tom Benson of any blame, but said the investigation showed Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis knew about the bounty program.

Payton accepted responsibility for the scheme and said he doesn't know what he'll do with his year off from the NFL. He added that he is still trying to gather information on the specific limitations of the suspension.

"He always said, 'I get into trouble when I get into the air, '" Payton recalled.
"When interviewed in 2012, Sean Payton claimed to be entirely unaware of the program, a claim contradicted by others, " the statement said.
Payton confirmed that he has approached Parcells, who led the Giants to two Super Bowl titles, but said discussions about whether the coaching legend might steer the Saints temporarily are preliminary.
