Normally, these holes are arranged in a hexagonal pattern, but the algorithm generated a bizarre flower-like patternofholes that no human would have thought of trying.
For both modes of crystal fibre, the patternofholes is generated by stacking hollow glass tubes a millimetre or so in diameter to form a rod several centimetres thick.
