In an interview at the company's headquarters here, Mr. Cook unveiled a new version ofthe company's Mac operating system that incorporates several features from thesoftware that powers Apple's hit mobile devices.
The company's operating margins have been increasing thanks to its widening proportion ofsoftware and services, he points out, along with a growing mainframe business and decreased spending on employee pensions.
Thecompany also showed a new version of its mobile operating system and other internally developed software, including a version of its music recording program Garage Band.
The new software is built on open Web standards and is capable ofoperating on much less sophisticated devices than many existing smartphones, thecompany says.
