My memory is that they were chunky machines, operated solely by keyboard - no mouse - with a screen where a blinking cursor invited you to fill in various boxes with your script.
Sometimes I will find myself staring at the blinking Sanskrit of an airport arrivals and departures schedule to the point of no longer remembering where I'm going, or why I'm bothering.
