I'm Ira Flatow talking with Kevin Trenberth at NCAR in Boulder.
He's a senior scientist and the head of the Climate Analysis Section at the National Center for Atmospheric Research - that's NCAR - in Boulder, Colorado.
Lead author Jeffrey Lazo, an NCAR scientist, pointed out that this study was an initial estimate that did not measure the extreme weather events of 2011.
These waves can travel up to 180 miles (300 kilometers) before breaking, said Robert Sharman, a meteorologist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), who conducted the study.

In 2006, a team led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) predicted that the approaching solar maximum would be the most intense in fifty years.
NCAR, heat and moisture figures from the fire are also fed back into the corresponding grid squares of the weather model, to simulate the way in which the fire, in turn, affects the weather.
"If it hadn't been for the increase in human-produced greenhouse gases, summer temperatures in the Arctic should have cooled gradually over the last century, " said Bette Otto-Bliesner, an NCAR scientist who participated in the study.

"While the ice is disappearing faster than the computer models indicate, both observations and the models point in the same direction: the Arctic is losing ice at an increasingly rapid pace and the impact of greenhouse gases is growing, " said co-author Marika Holland of NCAR.
Roger, you are the head of what is perhaps the most prestigious atmospheric science laboratory on the planet, and, as such, I presume that you will always go the extra mile to protect the reputation of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and its related University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).
But the research, conducted by the U.S.-based National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of Colorado's National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), demonstrates that the 18 models on which the IPCC has based its current recommendations could already be out of date -- and that the retreat of the ice could already be 30 years ahead of the IPCC's worst case scenario.
