White House officials tell CNN that Clinton is inthe final stages of approving a proposal to get the FEC to take action on its own that would achieve theban on soft money envisaged inthe McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform legislation.
After nearly two weeks of debate, 57 senators (44 Democrats and 13 Republicans) voted in favour of preserving the soft moneyban if the Supreme Court rules other parts of the bill unconstitutional.
Although Clinton had challenged Lazio to a soft-money ban after he entered the race in May, the issue lay dormant until Lazio brought it up at their first televised debate September 13.
