The early 3-D leader, Japan's Sharp Electronics, has sold 3 million mobile phones that transform 2-D photographs into 3-D images using screen filters and software.
Samsung collaborates with companies like i-Free, a Russian mobile tech company on the development of 3-D viewing apps for smart TVs and also has a nascent retail strategy under development in Russia.
Omar Khan, the strategy chief for Samsung Telecommunications, said mobile devices will be more valuable in the 3-D space as a way to capture content in that format, rather than to view it.
Google didn't disclose the names of cities for which 3-D imagery would be available but added that the new feature would be made available on Apple mobile devices as well as those powered by Android.
