Other competitors in the services sector include: Ashford Hospitality Trust, Inc. (AHT), MHI Hospitality (MDH), and American Assets Trust, Inc (AAT).
One thing is clear: in productivity and profitability Hitachi-MHI has a long way to go to match GE and Siemens.

MHI's chairman passed into folklore recently when he said that maximising profit was, he thought, an inappropriate aim for manufacturing companies.
The merger with MHI will fill out its product and service lines.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), the shipbuilding arm of Mitsubishi, has developed a new grain ship able to reduce CO2 emissions by blowing bubbles.

Will Hitachi-MHI, like many merged Japanese companies (Mizuho Bank is a prominent current example), being unable to reduce staff, simply layer on management levels that slow decision-making and dull competitiveness?

As all these players are improving technology and performance to sharpen competitiveness, there is real fear at MHI that a one year delay will be severely disadvantaging in the fight for new orders.
What is certain is that if MHI falters (and here I am echoing the analysis of the Eclectica Fund that I criticized in an earlier post), it will be a devastating and probably world-shaking blow.
The day after the post came a report in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (May 25, 2012) that MHI has encountered quality problems in its MRJ (Mitsubishi Regional Jet) program that will delay deliveries by a year.
The Hitachi-MHI combination is the Japanese response.

Clearly, if MHI is going to make a business of this (as well as of its short haul MRJ commercial jet) it is going to have to find a way to cut its costs and reduce prices to customers.
