The 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment, the Staffordshire Regiment and the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters combined as the Mercian Regiment as part of the Army's infantry restructuring plans.
The Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry, which is the armoured regiment for the West Midlands and north west of England, has squadrons based in Dudley, Telford, Chester, Wigan and Hereford.
The four infantry battalions to disappear are the 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, the 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards), the 3rd Battalion the Mercian Regiment and the 2nd Battalion the Royal Welsh.
