Ofsted's report on maths teaching, published at the end of last year, said too much of it was "taught to the test" and that this did not equip pupils for their futures.
But shadow schools minister Kevin Brennan said the report showed that the government had the wrong priorities and should be doing more to provide support in basic skills at primary level as well as strengthening English and maths teaching at secondary level and allowing all students to continue those subjects until 18.

England's Department for Children, Schools and Families rejected the claims, saying it had done a great deal to recruit science and maths graduates into teaching.
Students tended to think maths leads to teaching or accountancy, when it could mean a career in Formula 1 racing, code-breaking or journalism, a spokeswoman for the consortium said.

In teaching maths, for instance, both those countries spend more time on basic arithmetic than on deeper mathematical ideas, emphasise mental arithmetic, rely on standard teaching manuals and favour whole-class (as opposed to group) teaching.
With virtually no state schools providing adequate teaching in science or maths, he says, the country has added to its vast problem of unemployment (every other 18-24-year-old is out of work) a no less vast problem of unemployability.
Beyond pointing his finger at the problem, though, Mr Sanchez has not said much about how to realise his goal of teaching all children to read and do basic maths by the time they are eight.
Mr Gove said he had asked Ofqual to ensure that there would be new GCSEs in seven subjects - English, maths, the sciences, history and geography - ready for teaching by 2015.
