The White House has announced several commitments by universities and businesses to further the goals of the Materials Genome Initiative.

Additionally, in order to reduce the time to develop and deploy advanced materials, a Materials Genome Initiative is being launched today, and the National Science and Technology Council has released a white paper on that effort.

WHITEHOUSE: Ensuring American Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing

Iowa State University, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Ames Laboratory, in partnership with a network of universities and industrial partners, will be initiating a series of workshops called "Mapping the Materials Genome" focused on identifying the critical research challenges and establishing the experimental and computational techniques by which the "Materials Genome" can in fact be realized.

After years of research and the expenditure of billions of dollars, universities, research institutions and private companies succeeded about 10 years ago in mapping the human genome, showing the long string of genetic materials that's found in all cells.
