Defensive medicine includes all the extra tests and procedures performed to deter lawsuits and is separate and apart from spending on malpracticepremiums, which add another 1 percent to health spending.
They went so far as to go on record with the Texas Insurance Commissioner, promising that such a law would go a long way towards reducing the malpracticepremiums they charged physicians, thereby reducing the cost of medical care to the consumer.
Opponents of the bill warn of an avalanche of lawsuits and point out that premiums have already been escalating for years because of malpractice suits against doctors.
