Instead of individual subjects, the curriculum focuses on four main areas (communication, knowledge, citizenship and employment) in order to develop four key competencies, 22 skills and 180 items for evaluation.

The 1990s saw a step in this direction, with the development of a new form of testing that assesses the extent to which young people and adults in different countries acquired certain key competencies required for work and everyday life.

ECONOMIST: A breakthrough in measuring the knowledge economy

Starting in early 2013, the four-year initiative will focus on enhancing teacher education systems in eight countries so as to train an adequate number of qualified teachers to achieve EFA. Project activities will boost national capacity in ministries and key teacher training institutions, staff skills and competencies and supporting resources such as a knowledge base, with ICT as a major component.
