Washington Mutual 's Kerry Killinger called in a few friends from the past to help salvage the largest U.S. thrift, and possibly his job.

James Vanasek, a former chief risk officer at WaMu, testified to a Senate investigative panel Tuesday that he urged chief executive officer Kerry Killinger to take WaMu in another direction as the mortgage market heated up in the mid-2000s.
