The Imperial study, of more than 1, 200 people, identified two forms of the GAD2 gene.
The Imperial College London study in the Lancet Oncology compared patches and injections in 254 patients.
Writing in the BMJ, Professor Neena Modi from Imperial College London said the study was important because it provided the most up-to-date information on survival rates.
"Women switching to exemestane had fewer cases of cancer in the other breast, which also suggests that taking the drug after tamoxifen may be a better way to prevent breast cancer than taking tamoxifen alone, " said Professor Charles Coombes of Imperial College London, the study's lead author.
Prof Philippe Froguel from Imperial College London, who led the study, said that prevention was the best strategy.
Professor John Gruzelier, from Imperial College London at Charing Cross Hospital said further study is needed.
Study leader Professor Jonathan Waxman, from Imperial College London, said vitamin D therapy was effective and well-tolerated.
"These studies show that RSV is a 'hit and hide' virus, rather like HIV or some hepatitis viruses, " said Professor Peter Openshaw of Imperial College and one of those involved in the study.
