The UK had been due to set a date for phasing out all its imperialmeasurements within three years, but the European Commission will announce later it is leaving all future decisions to the British government.
Mr Chichester said following lobbying by the Tories, the commissioner agreed it was good for British and European industry to keep imperialmeasurements as it would make it easier for firms to sell to the US, where such measures are used.
