This binding process stimulates production of a protein called interleukin-10 (IL-10) that acts as an anti-inflammatory compound and which helps keep the immune system's response to the infection in check.
One approach could be to develop drugs that can bind tightly to the receptors on immune cells and induce the production of the anti-inflammatory IL-10.
But thanks to the economic crisis, the number of Romans leaving for ferragosto has diminished, with Italian newspaper Il Messaggero reporting that only one in three Romans will leave for a week or more this year, down 10% from last summer.
