"We hope that this training initiative will be the start of an ongoing partnership between the University of Pretoria and the community of Zithobeni, where information and communication technologies could be more and more used for sustainable development, " says Kirstin Krauss, a PhD student from the Department of Informatics, who has piloted the previous UNESCO-funded ICT training project in deep rural Kwa Zulu Natal.
The three-year project will install ICT infrastructure, both material and virtual, in higher education institutions.
As part of this program, UNESCO and Nokia are joining hands, where Nokia is providing its mobile phones and its application "Nokia Education Delivery (NED)" for UNESCO s project on use of ICT for professional development of public school teachers in remote areas.
It is funded by the Kenya Transparency and Infrastructure Project which was spearheaded by the Kenya ICT Board (KICTB).

"This city hopefully will bring the tech companies together and spark a new ICT revolution in Ghana, " she says, adding that the project could equip local techies with the necessary skills to develop apps that would solve community problems, as well as provide a platform for tech companies to find new talent and opportunities to invest in.

The UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, Venice (Italy), is associated with the Open Discovery Space (ODS) project, funded by the European Commission under the CIP ICT-PSP call 5, and kicked off in Athens in April 2012, resulting of the collaboration between 51 organizations from 23 countries, with the aim to create a socially-powered, multilingual open learning infrastructure to boost the adaptation of eLearning Resources in Europe.
Upon completion, the project hopes to deliver activities for the community such as fitness, education, ICT, craft classes and book and cookery clubs.
The seminar took place within the framework of the regional IPDC project, Strengthening Media as a Platform for Democratic Discourse through Training and Application of ICT Tools.
