Nelson marine biologist Zoe Hilton has won a prestigious science award that honours outstanding, young women scientists from around the world.

His book was also shortlisted for the Dingle Prize, which honours publications about the history of science.

Also included on the Honours list were Bonnie Dean, chief executive of Bristol and Bath Science Park, and Colin Irwin John Hamilton Drummond, chief executive of Viridor Waste, who have both been appointed OBEs for services to technology and innovation.

Born in 1953 in the southern state of Virginia, Gen Allen graduated with military honours from the US Naval Academy in 1976, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Operations Analysis.
