Two firms are racing to deliver the first commercial holo-drives: InPhase Technologies of Longmont, Colo. and Aprilis in Maynard, Mass.

After three decades in the labs, the first commercial versions of holo-drives should be available by 2005 or early 2006.

All that would be needed for a holo-conference would be an array of spinning mirrors and projection TVs set up around a table.

Because the data are written and read in megabit chunks, holo-drives can transfer data at 20 megabytes per second, far faster than optical drives.
