Munch painted four versions of his famous painting between 1893 and 1910, and there are two of the originals on view at the Munch Museum, one at the National Gallery of Norway and one at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

His demise inspired the Radio Times to recreate the famous Death of Nelson painting, featuring Baldwin in the Nelson pose surrounded by fellow soap characters.

Gruesome scenes from literature also feature, including a painting by Donato Mascagni of Dante's famous Count Ugolino, who was imprisoned with his sons in the Inferno and who survived by eating them.
