Mr Hirsch says there was a similar change in lending terms before the meltdown of 1998, though even then lenders earned much wider spreads.

Many of the insurance companies and specialised institutions that used to buy these loans are now out of the market, replaced, Mr Hirsch says, by hedge and mutual funds.
The financial crisis trumped seasonal market forces from October 2007 through August 2009, but stocks have been tracking historical patterns pretty closely since the fall of 2009, Mr. Hirsch says.
"We have seen the highs for 2005 and do not expect the year to end in the black, " says Hirsch.
"In the last 14 midterm election years, only six full years followed the direction of the first five days, " says Hirsch.
"It does not include a big night out on the town, it's going out for a cup of coffee, " says Hirsch.
" Still, says Hirsch, 70: "I know he's 100% focused on me and can still help someone else at the same time.
"We think that the company may spin RSDL off much in the same way it spun off AngioDynamics, " says Hirsch, who also notes that E-Z-EM trades at a discount to its medical equipment peers.
New presidents, says Hirsch, like to get their dirty work done in the first year or two of their term and then "prime the pump" to produce good times during their reelection campaigns--a view held by most of those who observe the cycle.
Since October there have been several similar deals, says Mr Hirsch.
